Summary

"The brightest star needs the darkest night。"

In a world abandoned by the celestial guardians and left to suffer a tyrant king’s reign, all Astraea knows is safety in seclusion。 With fragmented memories of only five years of her life, she’s determined to discover more about her past, even if that means fleeing the cruel arms that hold her safe from the wicked vampires rumored to roam the land。

But when Astraea stumbles upon the mysterious Nyte, she soon realizes determination alone isn’t enough to guard her heart。 He lingers like the darkness that expands between the stars, and soon she discovers her captor’s wicked means of control weren’t based on a lie to keep her under locks after all。 In her desperation, Astraea accepts Nyte’s help before she can decide if she might have sold her allegiance to one of the bloodthirsty beings the people of her world fear。

Once their bargain is struck, Astraea’s chance to escape comes in the form of accompanying her best friend Cassia to the King’s Central。 There on royal territory it’s the centenary of the Libertatem, a succession of trials hosted by the king in which five human lands compete for a cycle of safety from the vampires seeking blood, claiming souls, and savaging after dark。 So when tragedy strikes, Astraea must decide if taking the place of a murdered participant for the safety of her kingdom is a ruse is worth dying for, or if protection—and the answers to her past—really are her strongest desires。

Honestly I really liked the romance…while the world building had really cool possibilities I felt it wasn’t fully executed。 I found myself having to reread things characters thought a lot because the way it was written didn’t make sense。 I felt the story has really good possibilities but just the execution fell a little flat。 I also think the female main character was often made into a helpless little girl which lead to lots of eye rolling on my part。 Women can be feminine and still have power w Honestly I really liked the romance…while the world building had really cool possibilities I felt it wasn’t fully executed。 I found myself having to reread things characters thought a lot because the way it was written didn’t make sense。 I felt the story has really good possibilities but just the execution fell a little flat。 I also think the female main character was often made into a helpless little girl which lead to lots of eye rolling on my part。 Women can be feminine and still have power within themselves。 However I do think this author will continue to grow in the writing and I definitely loved their ideas! The creativity in this book was amazing。 。。。more

The plot was good。 It had a lot of potential。 However, the multiple grammar mistakes ruined the emotion for some of what should have been pivotal moments。 It also didn’t seem to flow at some parts。 It was still a good read, and I’ll most likely get the next one。

Had to DNF this one。 Originally ordered because the artwork and book itself were absolutely beautiful。 I wanted to love, but as hard as I tried, I couldn’t get into this one。 It was confusing and I genuinely had no idea what was going on。

I absolutely loved this book, the first 15%ish is confusing because the FMC is also confused。 So we’re learning together, but as we move through the story things are explained and make more sense。 The writing was beautiful and poetic and I enjoyed the fact that her syntax was varied。 I’m not sure if this is simply her writing style or the fact that she’s a Scottish author and things may translate differently in English。 Loved it。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️。 When is book two coming out?!

If 3。5 was an option I would select it。 The concept Chloe created was very unique, and had many twists that make it a bit different from other books in this genre。 However, as many other reviews say 。。 this book gets confusing。 The plot is everywhere and nowhere at the same time at many different points。 Although, I think it’s worth it to continue because it eventual all adds up, kind of。 Astraea oh boy。 While I understand her memories are wiped and she has fair degree of trauma - I felt like it If 3。5 was an option I would select it。 The concept Chloe created was very unique, and had many twists that make it a bit different from other books in this genre。 However, as many other reviews say 。。 this book gets confusing。 The plot is everywhere and nowhere at the same time at many different points。 Although, I think it’s worth it to continue because it eventual all adds up, kind of。 Astraea oh boy。 While I understand her memories are wiped and she has fair degree of trauma - I felt like it was played upon to much。 As the main protagonist she was continuously portrayed as helpless and dependent on whatever someone offered her。 Healing? No。 Character growth? Not really。 Until she finally decides to follow Nyte towards the end of the book。 Personally, I would have loved to see her character explore herself more rather than relying on everyone else to guide her。 The world is intriguing enough for me to continue, and all the characters are like a piece of a puzzle。 I am intrigued enough to see how the pieces fit。 Will definitely be checking out the second book when it’s released。 However, I have higher hopes for the next one, and I hope the author takes notes of the other reviews。 。。。more

DNF 33%Now, I hate DNFing a book。 My FOMO and anxiety battle it out, and I internally freak out for an entire day about what if I am doing the book an entire disservice by not completing it。BUT I JUST CAN'T CONTINUE WITH THIS。。。From the first line of the prologue, I was confused。 I wasn't sure if it was because it was late or I was tired, so I read it again the next day, and I still didn't understand what was going on。 I think it came down to overall this book made me feel stupid as I DIDN'T UND DNF 33%Now, I hate DNFing a book。 My FOMO and anxiety battle it out, and I internally freak out for an entire day about what if I am doing the book an entire disservice by not completing it。BUT I JUST CAN'T CONTINUE WITH THIS。。。From the first line of the prologue, I was confused。 I wasn't sure if it was because it was late or I was tired, so I read it again the next day, and I still didn't understand what was going on。 I think it came down to overall this book made me feel stupid as I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND。。。。Firstly, the worldbuilding felt messy and confusing and didn't really make sense - there are fae, vampires, and celestials but are celestials types of either? The names and places seem like they are thrown together and not pieced together well, and the lore is a weird amalgamation of all three's general "backstory" when you think of fae, vampires, and celestials。The writing was also just as messy; sentences felt overly metaphorical or there were just random additional words added。 I found that a lot of aspects had to be inferred as it wasn't clearly explained, so I wasn't sure if it happened or not。 The sentences just felt so convoluted and complex but just ended up confusing the living daylights out of me。I also have no clue what the plot is - I read almost 200 pages, and I don't know what the purpose of the story is - what the prophecy has to do with anything as it just feels like random things thrown together。Overall, I don't like it if books are overly confusing and make me feel stupid so this was not for me。 。。。more

While there was a time the story was just dragging out, the storyline delivery was well executed。 I'm definitely looking forward to the second installment。 Considering this is my first time reading Chloe's work。 She just looped me in。 While there was a time the story was just dragging out, the storyline delivery was well executed。 I'm definitely looking forward to the second installment。 Considering this is my first time reading Chloe's work。 She just looped me in。 。。。more

Oh man, this book。I did have high expectations because I heard such good things, so I was surprised at how slow of a start it was for me, but the anticipation and tension built throughout the story was pure magic! It's a fresh take on star-crossed lovers that I haven't read before, but with so many secrets and reveals, that I seriously need Book 2 ASAP! I would honestly give this book 5 stars! This book got me through my TOG/ Crescent City hangover! When I was reading the reviews for this book, I noticed quite a few of them were mad that the characters didn’t fully develop and that they were still left with questions about the main female character (Astraea)。 I think people forget that this is an evolving story。 This is going to be a multiple book series so why would we learn absolutely everything in book 1? I would say it does get a bit slow in the middle but it does pick up。 I absolutely can’t wait for her to release the second book! Is 1000% in my TBR。 。。。more

2。5 I really wanted to like this more than I do。 But it’s another Blood and Ash / Gilded / trials story。Even then, I’d have liked it for the celestial powers。 But the jumpy plot and Starlights character brought down my rating。 The plot was fun, but it bounces from scene to scene in a jarring way。 Especially as Starlight’s emotional states bounce so dramatically from scene to scene。 I can’t handle one more “I trust you, I’m here for you” to “I hate you, you lied to me, nothing you say is real” ba 2。5 I really wanted to like this more than I do。 But it’s another Blood and Ash / Gilded / trials story。Even then, I’d have liked it for the celestial powers。 But the jumpy plot and Starlights character brought down my rating。 The plot was fun, but it bounces from scene to scene in a jarring way。 Especially as Starlight’s emotional states bounce so dramatically from scene to scene。 I can’t handle one more “I trust you, I’m here for you” to “I hate you, you lied to me, nothing you say is real” back and forth over and over and over。 How am I supposed to buy into this eternal love thing when she’s so flip floppy, and he’s such a secret hoarder。 Like, five different ppl spill his secrets to her as he growls “don’t”。 And they arn’t even great secrets to be keeping。JUST TALK ALREADYStarlight was trying too hard to be three different women。 One—the victim of abuse recovering。 Two—a sassy fighter underdog—-three a celestial goddess discovering her lost memories。 Any one of these arcs could have been compelling。 Better yet, spread each arc across three different books。 But all forced together at once was annoying。Don’t think I’ll continue。 。。。more

DNF at 40% I picked up this book again after putting it down last July。 The writing is just confusing and normally I can pick a book up again from where I left off but I'm having a hard time with this one。 I do remember having a hard time with the way the author explained certain things when I first picked it up。 Sad that this one didn't work for me。 DNF at 40% I picked up this book again after putting it down last July。 The writing is just confusing and normally I can pick a book up again from where I left off but I'm having a hard time with this one。 I do remember having a hard time with the way the author explained certain things when I first picked it up。 Sad that this one didn't work for me。 。。。more

(4。5 stars) Being completly honest, there was at least 10% of this book I didn't understand LOL。 Regardless, I loved Astraea and Nyte (specially Astraea)。 Can't wait to see what happens next! ⭐️: 4/5🌶️: 2。5/5“The dark belongs to the stars who can’t shine without it。”Like everything else Chloe writes, this was captivating and beautiful。 I love how the world building itself was left on a cliff hanger along with the fmc memories。 The only two things I’m upset about is that I need the next book nooooow & that it took me so long to finally read this。 🖤

This book was trying to do the most which made some plot points way too confusing but at the same time highly predictable。 The main question I had at the beginning wasn’t answered but I don’t think I care enough to read book 2 to find out more。 If this wasn’t a book club book I probs would have DNFd tbh。 Nyte was a cool guy tho ✌🏼

My StarlightOh my stars。 This book is wonderful。 I love the characters and the plot。 A whole world waiting for the star-maiden。 I would have like a little more world building, maybe more in depth on the stars and celestial realm。 Hopefully in the next book, with the Maiden awake, it’ll come。 There were a few unexpected twists, just to keep one interested。 I can’t wait to get into the next book。

Alwin T

I was so excited to read this book。 But I had lots of moments wherein I’m reading the sentence a few times just to understand what the prose is trying to say。 It definitely has my favorite tropes but it still wasn’t doing it for me。 It has so much potential tho *_*

Brooke Thacker

This book is absolutely STUNNING! My friend recommended it to me and I’m so thankful because it’s so good! The magic, world building and banter were really well done and left me wanting more。 I can’t wait for the next one after that cliffhanger ending。 It’s a trilogy so lots more story to dive into! If you’re looking for a new book I definitely recommend The stars are dying

Shannon Griffiths

Overall 4 ⭐️ This book was so good and got so frustrating at certain points, because you only know as much as the main character and because she lost her memories, she doesn’t know much。 The last 100 pages had me so hooked!

Ugh - all the time spent with no reward。 This book seemed to drag forever which in turn made me take forever to finish it。 The story was okay in the whole but to drag it on so long without any real revelations made it not worth it。 I barely made it through the first book so having to wade through a second to get answers really is t on my list。 I had such high hopes for this book from all the recommendations that kept coming up but it missed the mark for me。
